The 10th annual Gold Star Mission 500 begins with students, veterans and communities helping carry the stories of Illinois Fallen Heroes.
CHESTER, Ill. — The 10th annual Gold Star Mission 500 officially rolled out of Chester today, beginning five days and more than 500 miles dedicated to preserving the memories of Illinois Fallen Military Service Members and standing with the Gold Star families who carry those memories every day.
From the opening miles, the Mission was visible in the people waiting along the route. Students and educators welcomed riders at Chester High School before the group continued north through stops that included Coulterville High School, Marissa Jr. & High School, O’Fallon Township High School and Granite City High School. At each school, the focus remained the same: helping the next generation understand that behind every name is a life, a family and a story worth remembering.
Veterans and community supporters also met the riders throughout the day, including stops connected with Scott Air Force Base VFW and American Legion Post #365.
This year’s ride carries an added international connection, with participants from Poland joining American riders in a shared commitment to remembrance. Their presence reflects the bonds between military communities and families that cross borders while honoring those who served.
Day 1 concluded in Granite City after approximately 100 miles, over 2,100 ft elevation gain and strong headwinds. Riders will continue north tomorrow, carrying the names and stories of the Fallen into another day of Illinois schools, veterans organizations and communities.
Gold Star Mission exists to honor and support Illinois Gold Star families by preserving the memory of their Illinois Fallen Military Service Members. Follow the GSM500 throughout the week on Facebook and return to GoldStarMission.org for each day’s full recap.
